Helping Your Baby or Child Sleep in the Heat: 7 Practical Tips for Parents

As the temperature rises, getting your child to sleep comfortably can become a challenging task. Warmer temperatures without air conditioning can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to restless nights for both you and your little one.

Here are some practical tips to ensure your baby/child stays cool and sleeps soundly during those hot nights.

Reduce Sun Exposure During the Day

Keeping your child out of direct sunlight, especially during the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., can help prevent overheating. Try to balance time in the shade and indoors.

Use a buggy/pram with a sunshade when outside, and dress your baby in lightweight, breathable clothing. Sunhats and UV-protective clothing can also help shield your baby from the sun's rays.

Stay Hydrated

Keeping your baby hydrated is crucial in hot weather. For babies under six months who are exclusively breastfed, additional water isn't necessary, as breast milk provides all the hydration they need.

For older babies, ensure they are drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day and if they are not great at drinking, encourage foods that contain water such as fruits and vegetables.

Keep Blinds and Curtains Closed

To keep the bedroom cool, close blinds and curtains during the day to block out the sun's heat. This simple step can significantly lower the temperature in the room, creating a more comfortable sleeping environment for your baby.

Open Windows at Optimal Times

Cool your home down by opening windows early in the morning and late in the evening when the air is cooler. This will allow cooler air to circulate and help lower the indoor temperature. Be sure to close windows and blinds as the day heats up to trap the cool air inside.

Give a Cool Bath Before Bed

A cool bath before bedtime can help lower your baby’s body temperature, making them more comfortable and ready for sleep. Bathing your baby in luke warm water will not cause their core body temperature to increase which can lead to bedtime struggles.

Use Cellular Blankets or Cotton Sheets

Avoid heavy duvets and opt for cellular blankets or cotton sheets instead. These materials are breathable and can help regulate your baby's body temperature more effectively. Cellular blankets, in particular, have a special weave that allows for better air circulation.

Try Merino Wool Sleepwear

Merino wool sleepwear is an excellent choice for keeping your baby comfortable in the heat. This natural material is known for its ability to regulate body temperature, keeping your baby cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s cool. It’s also soft and gentle on the skin.

Ensuring your child gets a good night’s sleep during hot weather can be challenging, but with these tips, you can create a comfortable sleeping environment. By reducing sun exposure, keeping your baby hydrated, and using appropriate bedding and sleepwear, you can help your little one sleep soundly despite the heat. Remember, a well-rested baby is a happy baby, and that means more restful nights for the whole family.
